New Media Marketing / Journalism
Public Relations / Educational Resources
I am a writer and a teacher. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky. As an undergraduate, I wrote for the campus newspaper ‘The Collegian‘ and focused my course of study on English Secondary Education with a minor in Spanish. In order to continue improving my writing skills, I also earned a Master of Arts degree in English from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky. I specialized in creative writing and American literature.
I have almost completed another Master’s degree in new media journalism through Full Sail University in Orlando, Fla. I am very excited about using not only my journalistic skills, but also my my knowledge of social media platforms for storytelling, promotions and customer analysis.
I started my career as an English and Spanish classroom teacher in Kentucky and am now teaching again in Tennessee. This return to the education field has allowed me to become current with the latest curriculum standards, various methods of assessment and 21st-century learning.
During my 10 years in consumer goods sales with Tetra and United Pet Group, I traveled extensively throughout the southeast United States and Puerto Rico. I was responsible for placing aquarium and pet supplies with distributors and pet stores. However, I am especially proud of being part of the core teams that developed Tetra’s Aquademics program and its eLearning website called Tetra University.
Tetra designed Aquademics to promote fish keeping skills in fourth and fifth grade classrooms across the country and tie the hobby to all content areas. I was also asked to write lessons for the teachers guide. Tetra’s upper management group spearheaded Tetra University as a training tool for fish care, product knowledge and merchandising for employees and retailers.
I have written feature articles, a how-to series, promotional brochures, lesson plans, catalog descriptions and newsletters. I have edited student handbooks, distributor price lists and books.
I was the Community Relations Coordinator for Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Louisville, Ky. One of my biggest successes was organizing a book signing for Rick Pitino, who was the University of Kentucky basketball coach at the time.
The store hosted more than 400 people for the signing, and, of the tree scheduled that day in Louisville, the local newspaper reported that the one at Barnes & Noble was the best organized and most customer-friendly of all of the events.
